It is a comfortable and interesting 6 Hours drive north from Christchurch (with a lunch break and several scenery stops). It is also just across the bay by ferry from Wellington should you wish to come that way. Along the way we saw a seal colony just by the roadside and enjoyed our very first fresh Lobster Sandwich (just $5NZ –....

Cable Bay
Cable bay beach in on a thin strip of stones when Tasman bay on one side and Delaware Cable Bay estuary on the other. It's a nice remote spot to have a picnic that most tourists don't find. The family was approached by Lands & Survey regarding, public access through the farm over 20 yrs ago. It seemed the way to go as in those days every week....

Abel Tasman National Park
There is an easy walking track between Marahau and Totaranui that can be done in four or five days. You can stay in huts provided for $12-15 a night but they can be booked up over summer. The other option is to camp which is done on a first in bases and costs $3-4 a night. You must carry in all your own food but there is one Resturant in Awaroa that offers a welcome beer! Other options are to hire a Sea Kayak or you can catch the watertaxi if you are feeling tired or lazy.
