Last year we visited Chiang Mai for the Thai new Year which is called Songkran and we did not make arrangements for any hotel accommodation, we though it was not necessary. However we discovered that Chiang Mai is really popular for people visiting there for Songkran. We did in the end find a hotel room but it took us a lot of searching.
So my tip is that firstly Chiang Mai is one of the best places in Thailand to enjoy Songkran New Year festivities, we saw parades and there were so many thing going on. Secondly do make sure you book in advance. We were so lucky we had arranged flights as not only was out flight full but there were even extra flights laid on just for Thai New Year.
If you are in Thailand mid April do try and head to Chiang Mai for Songkran, but make sure you arrange your transport and hotels well in advance.
We loved Chiang Mai and hope to go again soon.

I forgot to mention that the New Year is as the time when blessing people with water becomes the water festival, so you may get quite wet. Do a search to find more about Songkran, but certainly one of the best times to visit Chiang Mai.

Agree with Miranda, Chiang Mai is a great place to enjoy Songkran. And make sure you book hotel before you get there, since it\'s difficult to find available rooms and it\'s no fun running around with your bags getting soaked during the water festival. Chiang Mai Spotlight Magazine (www.chiangmaispotlight.com) has some great information about Songkran in Chiang Mai.
